On Wednesday 19th March, twelve smart young business executives in Year 12 departed from 7 of Hong Kong’s finest Schools (IS, WIS, SIS, KGV, STC, RC, DC). They were bound for the ESF’s Inter-School Marketing Competition being hosted at Island School. The sponsors and co-organisers for the day were Surf Hong Kong (SHK). The Island School Business BTEC students had been working hard for the last 6 weeks to create a wonderfully organsied day of activities in a great working environment. The main hall looked fantastic decked out in a Surf theme from banners and table decorations to actual surfboards and, of course, classic surf tracks playing in the background.
Kevin Coniam, Entrepreneur and CEO of Surf Hong Kong (SHK), gave an inspiring opening presentation all about SHK, providing valuable information for the students. During the course of the day students had to complete three marketing orientated tasks. Task 3 was also of an ethical and environmental focus and would run beyond the confines of the day.
1) Presenting a promotional strategy to attract a new target market to SHK.
2) Creating a visual display of their key promotional objective to attract a new target market to SHL.
3) Creating a post to attract support for the Save Hoi Ha campaign.
The presentations were judged by an esteemed panel from across the competing schools. The day was very competitive with some extremely well thought out and professional presentations. All of the 14 teams participated and competed very well. Students gained valuable experience and showed a considerable range of skills. While it was considered that all the students were indeed winners, the actual teams in first and second place after Tasks 1 and 2 were the two King George V teams with Island School in 3rd. These team members all received vouchers for a free surf lesson from SHK.
The main prize of a surf weekend camp and BBQ, donated by SHK, and the ESF Inter- School Marketing Competition Trophy will be awarded after the competition of Task 3 on 9th April 2014.
A big Congratulations goes to all those who took part on what was an excellent day, and we look forward to competing again in 2015.
