During the second half of Easter break, two Island School students – Brian Wong (12W) and Claudia Tam (12F) – travelled to Lithuania as a part of the Hong Kong delegation to the annual tournament. Having been selected for the 10-man team back in November 2013, Brian and Claudia were coached by a highly experienced team to compete in the intense 7-day tournament.
The championships comprise four events: Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu, Debating, and Interpretive Reading. Both Brian and Claudia performed very well, with Brian finishing as the 6th best speaker in the world and a finalist (top 10) in both the Debating and Persuasive Speaking categories (as a returning competitor from WIDPSC 2012, when he ranked 15th), and Claudia ranking within the top 25 (as a three-time veteran competitor).
Brian and Claudia worked alongside some of the brightest and most capable debaters in Hong Kong, coming from a diverse range of schools including the German Swiss International School, Diocesan Girls’ School, Saint Paul’s Co-educational College, Shatin College, Chinese International School, and Hong Kong Academy. Amongst the selection of unforgettable memories from the trip, the highlights were a visit to the Imperial Palace and the Grand Finals, which were held at the Lithuanian National Parliament in Vilnius.
Both students would be returning to the competition next year to help out with the organisation – WIDPSC 2015 would be held in Hong Kong.
