Playtimes magazine this month features two Island School students Hayley Ip (1F3) and Jorja Townson (9W) in a article call Pursuing Passions. Each month Playtimes themes its issues and this month’s theme is ‘soul food’, activities that feed the soul.
Hayley, joint SOAR president, talks about the fulfillment she gets from her busy schedule including counselling students, she said; “When you help others, you are also helping yourself.” “If students are sad about their friends or are having disagreements with parents I can sympathise with them.” “I find that my guiding of others has improved my relationships with my friends and parents. It is not only me that is going through it, and I know the right advice to offer.” The feature lists all the charity and community work that Hayley does including providing first aid training and her aspirations to become a medic.
Vice Principal Monica Gilbert Saez is also quoted; “The commitment and enthusiasm that the students show is boundless and Island School is a unique place because of it”
Jorja Towson who stared as Brigitta Von Trapp in the HK version of the West End show The Sound of Music explains that her soul food comes from performing. Jorja’s mum Joanne said she sings from the moment she wakes up until she goes to bed. But performing nightly is not for the faint hearted Jorja, “Working with the professional cast has taught me discipline but it also has increased my confidence”.
60,000 copies of the free magazine are printed and distributed to primary school and kindergartens across Hong Kong.
