The Island School Social Justice group is a large group of students from Years 10 – 13 who are interested in raising awareness of and taking action on issues where they feel injustice has occurred or awareness needs to be raised. They have opted to focus on 4 areas this year; LGBT awareness raising, working to raise funds to support refugees in HK, raising awareness of modern slavery in HK and the rest of the world and helper school which provides support, education and a venue for helpers to meet on their day off.
This term the ISSJG have already held a spectrum day raising awareness of the issues faced by LGBT students in Hong Kong. Today, 20th Nov, the group supported the Island School 24 hour race team by holding a 24 minute race so that younger students can participate in an event that raises awareness of modern slavery.
There were House teams, teacher teams and the whole event was organised by Ayesha Shahani, Jenny Kang Connie Chu, Shauna Daswani, Alexia Rutkowski with photographers Claudia Lau and Parth Mody.
Einstein House completed the most laps in the 24 minutes with 35 laps. Congratulations and well done to all runners.
Our next focus week is November 30th – 4th Dec where we will be focusing more on anti slavery awareness raising followed by the Refugee support week the following week.
