Quest Week 2017, Year 8 Signing up Procedure

Quest Week 2017

Dear Y8 Students and Parents,

As you are all new to the procedure of signing up for Quest Week Options (which is happening very soon), we thought it would be a good idea to let you know what the procedure is.

Hopefully by now, you will know that the web site which contains all the information, costs and sample itineraries for Quest Week 2017 is now open for viewing. For students, this can be accessed via the Isle by following the tab “Student” and then selecting “Quest Week” from the drop down menu.  Parents can access the site from the Island School Home page by following the “Life at IS” tab selecting “Quest Week” from the drop down menu and then clicking on the sentence ‘Click here to visit the Island School Quest Week website’ at the bottom of the page. It can also be accessed via the link below –

http://questweek.is.island.edu.hk/

You have been asked to have a good look at what is available and what interests you. It is very important that you talk this through with your parents as well as your friends – because we know how important that is to most of you!

Information about the dates/times of the sign-up process are on the Quest Week web site under “Choosing Options Process”, which is in the drop down menu of “Quest Week Info” at the top of the home page. There is also information about “Choosing wisely” and “Being away from home”.

It is very important that before the options open for choosing; you know what your Gateway log-in is and that you double check that it works. You will need to do this in order to be able to make your selection.

Once on the Gateway web site, you need to click on:

1.)   Activities (in black next to ARR)

2.)   Activity in that pull-down menu.

3.)   Select Quest Week 2017 from the Blue tab at the top of the page.

4.)   Then you should be able to make your selection, once the Gateway system is ‘live’.

5.)   Once the option is full, you will get a “no quota” message if you continue to try to get in. You then need to select something else.

6.)   Whilst the system is open, you may change your option, but you must ‘withdraw’ from your chosen option before you can select another.

7.)   The options are filled on a first come – first served basis and they also have pre-set maximums. Once they are full, you will not be able to add your name, and so will have to consider an alternative option.

8.)   Please remember that your choices are FINAL and you cannot change your option once the system is closed.

If you have any difficulties with logging-in to the Gateway, please go to 143 before Saturday 11thMarch to ask for help.

Dates for Sign Up

1.    Sign up opens to Y11 & Y12 (next year’s Y12 & Y13) on Thursday 9th March at 8:00pm and closes on Friday 10th March at 9:00pm.

2.   Open to Y8, Y9 & Y10 (next year’s Y9, Y10 & Y11) on Saturday 11th March at 10:00am and closes on Sunday 12th March at 9:00pm.

We will then assess the situation on Monday/Tuesday 13th/14th March – we should be able to tell which options have low numbers, which might be able to be saved and which will definitely not run.

On Tuesday 14th March students who have chosen options which, due to low numbers, are not viable to run will be emailed and asked to make a new selection when the system re-opens on Wednesday 16th March.  At this point, if you do NOT receive an email you may assume that your place on your chosen option is secured and that the trip is viable at that time.

3.   The system re-opens to Y8 to Y12 on Wed 15th March at 8:00pm and closes for the final time on Friday 17th March at 9:00pm.

If you have any questions ahead of the sign up process please come and see Sasha in the general office.

Warm regards,

Ms. Sasha James and Mrs. Stephanie Weathington

IB Core Requirements Year 12

The Year 12 IB Diploma students are now moving into the time of year when Internal Assessments and the IB Core requirements begin to dominate their time.  I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of what the core requirements are and what will be coming up for the students.

There are three aspects of the IB Core that have to be satisfied for students to be awarded the full IB Diploma.  CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) is an ongoing programme that the students are already contributing to.  If you want more information on this please see the school CAS website.

The other two areas are the Extended Essay (EE) and the Theory of Knowledge (TOK).  Students will receive a grade in each of those two areas from ‘A’ to ‘E’ and this then combines to create core points out of 3.

As a reminder the points matrix for the Core is as follows:

http://island.edu.hk/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Core-Points-Grid.jpg

Students need to get at least a grade ‘D’ in both the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) to be awarded the IB Diploma.

The Extended Essay

The EE is 4000 word independent research based piece of academic writing.  The process will begin on the 7th March and will run until the final deadline on October 25th 2017.  The EE is either based on one of the subject disciplines that a student takes or it can be an interdisciplinary World Studies essay.  Students will be assigned a teacher supervisor who will help guide them through the process.    Supervisors are allocated on a subject basis with each teacher taking up to 3 students.  Students are asked to make three choices of subject areas and in most cases students do get their first or second choice.

Theory of Knowledge

There are two parts to the TOK assessment.  The first one is the Presentation which will take place on June 19th and 20th this year.  Students will then complete their TOK Essay in Year 13 with a final hand in date just after the Chinese New Year holiday.

If you have any questions about the IB Core requirements I would advise you to channel them through your son/daughter where possible.  The more they take ownership of the process the better and they will be given access to all of the information needed.
